Officer Kenneth Copeland Killed In The Line-Of-Duty, Monday

A San Marcos police officer was shot to death Monday afternoon while serving a warrant with other officers in a subdivision near an elementary school, police said. Officer Kenneth Copeland, 58, who was wearing a protective vest, was taken to Central Texas Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 3:50 p.m.

The suspect was shot during a standoff with the San Marcos/Hays County SWAT team and was taken to an Austin hospital, police said. The school was locked down after the shooting.

"Today we grieve for the family of the fallen San Marcos police officer, and we vow swift justice for the killer," Gov. Greg Abbott said in a statement Monday evening.

"The men and women in law enforcement put their lives on the line every day to protect and to serve our communities, and we will never forget their sacrifices."
